They are generally used by layout crews who would otherwise be manually marking layout on the floor, either using measuring tape and chalk lines, or with total stations.

Multi-trade layout incorporates multiple CAD or BIM files, from each of the different trades, and combines them together to be printed in a single pass over the floor.
